Manual Lymphatic Drainage

MLD

Have you ever had a cut, a burn or surgery and noticed a clear watery substance oozing out. Well this substance is called lymph.

Have you had cancer treatment and had lymph nodes removed or had radiation and are now experiencing heaviness and swelling in your limbs?

Well that swelling is caused by any damage to your lymphatic system and this causes a pooling of a substance called lymph. Lymph is simply a mixture of water, proteins, fat and debris that has escaped from the circulation into the tissues; but this must be returned back to the circulation for the body to be in balance. If the lymph is not returned we will see swelling, blistering, bruising and pooling which will cause tissue damage over time.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle technique which helps the body to move the lymph out of the tissues and back into the circulation thereby reducing swelling, encouraging healing and improving the appearance and everyday function.

For post cancer care MLD is used to treat:

• post mastectomy swollen arms and torso

• axillary dissection problems

• post abdominal cancer swelling

• post prostate cancer swollen legs

Treatments are usually 45-60 mins and when used in conjunction with compression therapy (bandaging, compression garments), the results are quite favorable.

The MLD technique is also used to treat:

• Lymphedema

• Whiplash, Motor Vehicle injuries

• Headaches/migraines

• Fractures/sprains

• Hip/knee replacement

• Post surgery swelling

• Burns/blisters

• Venous Edema

• Constipation

• any local area swelling like swollen pregnancy feet
